Design the stairs to your style.

Various stair designs.

We will have a look at various stair designs, this will demonstrate differences in design and how they should look. We will cover such things as:-

The difference between having a stairwell or not.

How the handrail and diminshing spindles work with a flight above.

Newel posts or no posts. etc.

Straight flight with newel and diminishing handrails and spindles set under.

A straight forward stair design with the handrail for the lower flight with landings set out set correctly to allow for the handrail to run into the underside of the flight above and drop to the floor with the spindles set on the landing nosing.

For this to work properly the landings and nosings must be set out correctly. See our quick guide on Newel Centre Line for a brief explanation.

Straight flight with stair well and newels.

A simple straight flight with newels top and bottom but also with a stairwell when the space permits it is a nice feature to have,  as this allows for more light to pass through and makes the stairs feel a bit grander.

Traditional flight with diminishing spindles and handrail.

This shows a more tradtional stair layout with the curtail tread, Newel post and Monkey’s tail at the start of the upper flight but still having the diminishing handrail and spindles on the lower landing.

Here you can see the handrail cut into the underside of the stairs to keep the centre lines in the correct position.
